YouTube Thumbnail Sizes — Complete Reference

YouTube stores each video thumbnail in multiple pre-rendered sizes. Understanding which size to download saves you from upscaling (which blurs the image) or downloading a file that is too large for your needs.

Note on 4:3 aspect ratio: The sddefault and hqdefault sizes use a 4:3 frame even though YouTube videos are 16:9. YouTube fills the extra space with black bars (letterboxing). Only maxresdefault and mqdefault are stored as pure 16:9.

YouTube URL Formats — All Supported

YouTube videos can be linked in many different ways depending on where you copy the URL from. Our tool recognises all of them and extracts the video ID automatically.

How YouTube Thumbnail URLs Work

YouTube serves all public video thumbnails from a single predictable CDN pattern:

https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/QUALITY.jpg

Replace VIDEO_ID with the 11-character video ID and QUALITY with one of: maxresdefault, sddefault, hqdefault, mqdefault, or default.

This CDN does not require authentication — no API key, no OAuth, no cookies. The URLs are completely public. This is how all YouTube thumbnail downloader tools work, including ours. The difference is that our tool downloads via a server-side proxy, which ensures the JPEG arrives as a clean file download rather than opening in a browser tab.

Designers and Marketers

Use thumbnails as visual references when designing YouTube channel art, end cards, or social media posts. Analyse colour palettes and composition of high-performing thumbnails.

Developers and Researchers

Build video galleries, recommendation systems, or content moderation tools that need thumbnail images. Use the direct CDN URL pattern in your backend without needing a YouTube Data API quota.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Paste any YouTube video link into the input field and click 'Get Thumbnails'. The tool instantly shows all available resolutions — Max HD (1280×720), Standard (640×480), High Quality (480×360), Medium (320×180), and Default (120×90). Click the Download button next to any resolution to save it as a JPEG. No sign-up required and no API key needed.
What thumbnail resolutions does YouTube support?
YouTube stores thumbnails in up to 5 sizes: maxresdefault.jpg (1280×720, only for HD-enabled videos), sddefault.jpg (640×480), hqdefault.jpg (480×360), mqdefault.jpg (320×180), and default.jpg (120×90). The first three variants (1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg) are frames from 25%, 50%, and 75% through the video — these are shown as video preview frames, not the custom thumbnail.
Why is the HD thumbnail (maxresdefault) not available?
Not every video has a 1280×720 HD thumbnail. Videos uploaded before mid-2013, videos that never passed a certain view threshold, and videos where the uploader did not set a custom thumbnail often only have the 640×480 (sddefault) as the highest quality. When maxresdefault is unavailable, YouTube returns a 120×90 placeholder image. Our tool detects this automatically and shows you an amber warning, so you always know the true best resolution.
Does this tool work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. YouTube Shorts use the same thumbnail system as regular videos. Paste a Shorts URL (youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID) and the tool extracts the video ID and shows all available thumbnail sizes. Shorts thumbnails are stored in portrait mode (9:16) but the thumbnail files themselves are still landscape-cropped JPEGs — the same as any other YouTube video.
Are YouTube thumbnails free to download and use?
Downloading is technically free and no authentication is required since thumbnails are served from YouTube's public CDN (img.youtube.com). However, thumbnails are copyrighted content — either by the video creator or by YouTube. You should only use downloaded thumbnails for personal reference, research, content creation about that specific video (e.g., a video review), or with explicit permission from the copyright holder. Using them commercially or redistributing them without permission may violate copyright law.
Does this require a YouTube API key?
No. YouTube thumbnails are served from a public CDN at img.youtube.com without any authentication. You do not need a Google account, YouTube API key, or OAuth token. The URL pattern is simply https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Our tool constructs these URLs on the client side and downloads them through a server-side proxy to ensure clean file downloads without CORS errors.
What format are YouTube thumbnails saved in?
YouTube thumbnails are always stored as JPEG (.jpg) files. JPEG is a lossy compressed format well-suited for photographs and realistic images. The quality varies by resolution — higher-resolution thumbnails (1280×720) are usually 50–150 KB, while the 320×180 and 120×90 sizes are under 20 KB. If you need a PNG or WebP version, you can convert the downloaded JPEG using an image converter tool after downloading.
Can I download thumbnails for private or age-restricted videos?
Private videos cannot have their thumbnails downloaded — YouTube does not serve thumbnail images for private videos on its public CDN. Age-restricted videos that require sign-in may or may not have publicly accessible thumbnails depending on when they were published. Unlisted videos (videos with a private link but not listed in search) do have public thumbnails accessible via the direct CDN URL if you know the video ID.
What is the difference between the five thumbnail resolutions?
maxresdefault (1280×720): Full HD custom thumbnail, best for blog posts, social sharing, and presentations. sddefault (640×480): Standard definition, good fallback when HD is unavailable — note the non-standard 4:3 aspect ratio. hqdefault (480×360): High quality, the most universally available size in 4:3 aspect ratio. mqdefault (320×180): Medium quality, 16:9 aspect ratio, good for preview cards. default (120×90): Tiny default, 4:3 aspect ratio, useful for inline video lists or favicons.
How do I find a YouTube video ID?
Every YouTube video has an 11-character alphanumeric ID. In a standard URL (youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcW), the ID is the value after 'v='. In a short URL (youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcW), the ID is the path after the slash. In Shorts URLs (youtube.com/shorts/dQw4w9WgXcW), it is after '/shorts/'. You can also paste the raw 11-character ID directly into our tool without a full URL.
Can I download thumbnails for multiple YouTube videos at once?
Yes. Use the Bulk Download tab. Paste one YouTube URL per line — you can mix watch, youtu.be, shorts, and live links. Click 'Extract Thumbnails' and the tool shows a grid of thumbnails for all detected videos. Each card has individual download buttons for HD, HQ, and an 'All' button that downloads all available resolutions sequentially.
Why does the SD thumbnail look stretched or have black bars?
The sddefault (640×480) and hqdefault (480×360) thumbnails use a 4:3 aspect ratio, while YouTube videos are 16:9. YouTube fills this by letterboxing (black bars top and bottom) or by cropping the 16:9 custom thumbnail to fit the 4:3 frame. This is a YouTube CDN artifact — only the maxresdefault (1280×720) and mqdefault (320×180) are stored in the native 16:9 aspect ratio without black bars.
